Greensburg, IN — A record $61,000 was raised this year by Farmers Feeding the Flock for the Greensburg Community Bread of Life.
The announcement was made during the organization’s harvest celebration dinner Friday evening at Greensburg High School’s Ag Building.
The 25-acre soybean field donated for the fundraiser by Shirk Family Farms in northern Decatur County was planted on May 19 and harvested on October 9.
The Shirk family members are Sam and his wife Shannon and daughter Eleanor Shirk; Sam’s parents Roland and Donna Shirk, and Roland’s sister Linda Volk.
Event organizer Merrill Smith says the field yielded 73 bushels per acre, and they netted $13.21 a bushel.
He says those amounts really helped the fundraiser’s bottom line – which is to help the Greensburg Community Bread of Life feed people in need.
The following amounts were raised each of the previous four years of the harvest:
- 2018 $25,000
- 2019 $40,000
- 2020 $48,000
- 2021 $57,700
With this year’s record amount, Farmers Feeding the Flock has raised a total of $232,608.48 for Greensburg Community Bread of Life.
