Contractor hired to mow grass around Batesville’s “front door”

Batesville Mayor Mike Bettice

Batesville, IN — The City of Batesville has hired a local contractor to take care of overgrowth around the I-74 interchange.

INDOT in recent years started limiting the number of times it mows to twice a year. The problem was compounded by the major renovation of the interstate from 2017 to 2019 since INDOT could not mow in what was – at the time – a construction zone.

The growth around the interchange, which is considered by many to be the city’s front door, has been called “unruly” and “an eyesore” by a number of residents.

“There’s going to be more to do because there’s a number of these little trees that have grown have grown up, that are two-, three-, four-, five-feet-tall, that need to be completely taken out,” said Mayor Mike Bettice. “And then they’ll start cutting the grass on a more regular basis.”

Mayor Bettice added the first bid is just under $8,000 but future expenses should be less. He said the contractor is expected to mow two more times this year following the initial cutting.
