Leising: Senate Committee on Agriculture gets an update from Purdue

Indianapolis, In. — Earlier this week, members of the Senate Committee on Agriculture, which I chair, and House Committee on Agriculture and Rural Development met in the Indiana Senate Chamber, where Jay Akridge, Purdue University’s Provost, and Willie Reed, the dean of the College of Veterinary Medicine, discussed the university’s veterinary program.

During their presentation, they highlighted the positive impact the College of Veterinary Medicine has on the state of Indiana, noting how it trains future veterinarians and veterinary nurses, conducts research and operates the Indiana Animal Disease Diagnostic Laboratory and Veterinary Teaching Hospital.

Akridge and Reed also mentioned the university’s current need to replace the college’s Veterinary Teaching Hospital. Future accreditation of the Veterinary School is in jeopardy without a new hospital. Purdue is Indiana’s only Veterinary School and one of 30 in the United States.

I thank these men for updating senators and representatives on this program as well as the issues it is facing.
