A two vehicle crash sent three people to the hospital on Monday afternoon, and halted traffic for three hours.

Authorities in Ripley County responded to an accident on U.S. Highway 421 at the intersection of C.R. 700N between Napoleon and Osgood around 3:30 p.m. Monday.

The accident involved a vehicle driven by Maxine Young, 83, of Osgood and a semi tractor-trailer operated by Cleton Swann, 44, of Fort Wayne.

Young was traveling with a child at the time of the collision.

“Statements from drivers and witness indicate that Young and Swann were both traveling north on US 421,” said investigating officer Cpl. Rob Bradley of the Ripley County Sheriffs Office.

According to a report released by Bradley, Young was preparing to turn left on C.R. 700N when her vehicle was struck from behind by Swann’s semi.

“The driver and witness statements are conflicting,” said Cpl. Bradley. “It appears that Swann was attempting to pass Young’s vehicle believing it was turning right. Witnesses stated that Young activated her right turn signal and turned left into the path of the Semi operated by Swann.”

The Ripley County Sheriffs Office was assisted on the scene by Osgood Police, Napoleon Fire, Osgood Fire, and Ripley County EMS.
