Jim’s Journal, April 23rd, 2024

In game 2 of their series in Cincinnati tonight, the Phillies will start pitcher Cristopher Sanchez, who’s 1 & 2 on the season so far, with an ERA of 2.95.  He’ll be up against the Reds’ Andrew Abbott, also 1 & 2, whose ERA is a close 2.70.  The broadcast begins this evening at 6:10, only on the radio, on the Sports Voice, 103.9 FM, WRBI.

In case you didn’t hear, after pitcher Frankie Montas got hit by that hundred-mile-an-hour batted ball Sunday, that raised a big bump on his throwing arm, Frankie’s now on the injured list for 15 days. For that interim, the Reds have recalled right-hander Casey Legumina from the Louisville Bats of Triple-A.  According to Manager David Bell, Frankie shouldn’t miss more than about 2 starts.  Fortunately, no bones were broken in that incident.

On the local diamonds today and tonight, the high schoolers are at it again.  Softball today had North Decatur hosting Milan, but that’s now been cancelled.  Softball games that are being played include Tri visiting South Decatur, Franklin County visiting now once-beaten Greensburg,  Jac-Cen-Del hosting Southwestern of Hanover, Connersville visiting Batesville, South Dearborn going to Rising Sun, and East Central at Rushville.

Tuesday baseball features South Decatur at Oldenburg Academy, South Ripley going to Greensburg, Rushville visiting South Dearborn, and again Batesville hosting Connersville.

The young golfers are out there on course these springtime days too.  Greensburg High tells us a couple of its players hit it like the pros for at least a few holes Monday–  the Pirates’ Colten Schroeder shot a 1 under-par 34 on the back 9 at Greensburg Country Club Monday, making Colten the medalist in the Pirates’ dual against South Dearborn.  Schroeder opened bogeying the par-3 10th hole, but then birdied the 14th & 16th, and was on his way.  Teammates Hunter Springmeyer came in with a 41, Reece Chapman had 43, Kaden Acton and Logan Simpson shooting 45’s.  Friday, the Pirates will take on North Decatur and South Decatur for, no surprise, the Decatur County tournament…  and Greensburg’s hosting.

More from the fairways–  Batesville Middle School topped St. Louis, Rising Sun, and North Decatur at North Branch Monday, the Bulldogs winning by 5 strokes with a 205.  Cade Rienschield was the medalist this time at 47, Stella Maple carding a 50.  The coaches say Nathan Mehlon scored his personal best, with a 49.  Today, Batesville Middle’s facing Columbus on a part 3 course.

Remember it’s the post-season for NBA basketball… the Pacers still in Milwaukee, after Damien Lillard scored 35 to lead the Bucks to a 109-94 win in Game 1 of their best-of-7 series.  Game 2 tips tonight at 8:30.
