Routine Traffic Stop Leads to Drug Arrests

Drug ArrestA routine traffic stop in Batesville Wednesday night led to the drug-related arrest of a Maryland man and a Cedar Grove woman.

Batesville Police initiated a traffic stop on East Pearl Street for a minor traffic violation.

A K9 unit assisted on the stop.  The K9 alerted to the presence of illegal drugs, and a subsequent search revealed suspected heroin and hypodermic needles.

Matthew Phelps, 29, and his passenger Ashley N. Reese, 20,, were arrested and charged with possession of heroin and possession of a hypodermic needle, both Level 6 felonies.

Both were remanded to the custody of the Ripley County Jail and were released Thursday after each posting a $2,050 bond.
