Zimmerman: Justice for sex crime victims shouldn’t have an expiration date

State Rep. Alex Zimmerman (R-North Vernon).

(Statehouse) – “Justice for sex crimes should not have an expiration date.”

Those are the words of local State Rep. Alex Zimmerman (R-North Vernon), who has filed legislation that would remove the statute of limitations so that prosecutors can pursue charges at any time for certain child sex crimes.

Right now, Hoosiers have until their 31st birthday to bring charges.

Zimmerman’s House Bill 1052 has been assigned to the House Committee on Courts and Criminal Code. That committee’s vice chair is another local state rep in Jennifer Meltzer (R-Shelbyville).

“My legislation would remove the statute of limitations so that prosecutors can pursue charges at any time for child molestation, vicarious sexual gratification, child solicitation, child seduction, and sexual misconduct with a minor and incest,” Zimmerman said. “That means these victims of abuse can seek justice no matter when they chose to come forward.’
