Whitewater Canal Scenic Byway receives national designation

Whitewater Canal Scenic Byway board members celebrate receiving a certificate marking the Metamora-based organization’s designation as a national byway.

METAMORA, IN — The Whitewater Canal Byway Association (WCBA) is hosting the two-day Indiana Byways Conference at the Whitewater Valley Gateway Park.

“We’re hosting this year because the Whitewater Scenic Canal Byway that runs through our six-county region received national designation as one of the top byways in the nation this year,” said Candy Yurcak with the WCBA. “We’re so excited!”

Sharon Strouse is the Executive Director of the National Scenic Byway Foundation and said the Metamora-based organization had to achieve state designation, and then make the case to become a national byway.

“They had to talk about the history and the heritage of this area of Indiana and why they’re nationally significant, so the burden was on them to show their national significance,” said Strouse.

The Whitewater Canal Scenic Byway goes through Franklin, Ripley, Dearborn, Fayette, Union, and Wayne counties and is one of only four in Indiana to receive National Scenic Byway status, and one of 160 nationally designated scenic byways in the country.

The conference began Thursday and runs through Friday.
