(Batesville, IN) – The Batesville Memorial Public Library (BMPL) held a grand opening, ribbon-cutting, and open house for the Arts and Innovation Hub on Wednesday.
The ribbon-cutting was conducted jointly by the Batesville Area, Ripley County, and Greensburg/Decatur County chambers of commerce. BMPL is a member of all three chambers.
The multi-million dollar, 8,300-square-foot facility includes a 200-person meeting room, maker space, an audio/visual recording area, meeting and collaboration spaces, reading and study rooms, plus an office for the Batesville Area Arts Council.
The outside area includes an event lawn and gathering plaza.
The project was completed on time and budget, and funded by a $2 million READI grant, $6.1 million in bond sales, plus grants and donations.
An estimated $350,000 has been raised through donations and grants, so far. The goal is $500,000.
Library executive director Kim Porter says support for the Hub has been overwhelming.
“The city council’s approval of the bond and Accelerate Rural Indiana READI 2.0 grant allowed us to move forward and start this project,” Porter said.
The project was a collaborative initiative between the library, local schools, arts organizations, and nonprofits, aimed at strengthening STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) education, boosting small business development, and supporting career exploration and mentorship opportunities.
The Hub is considered a key part of the City of Batesville’s downtown revitalization strategy and is expected to attract regional talent and investment while enhancing quality of life for the community.
“This beautiful library stands as a testament to what can happen when a community believes in an idea, and commits itself to making that a reality,” said Mayor John Irrgang. “This building is much more than bricks, steel and glass. It’s a place where children will discover a love of reading, where students will learn, where neighbors will connect, and where lifelong learning will flourish.
“Today, we celebrate more than the opening of a building. We celebrate an investment in our people, our future, and our community,” Irrgang added. “Congratulations to everyone who made this day possible. And thank you for helping make Batesville an even better place to live, learn, and grow.”
BMPL board president Mark Stenger served as emcee at dedication with remarks also delivered by Batesville Area Arts Council executive director Melissa Moenter; Accelerate Rural Indiana Treasurer Bruce Everheart, and Jeff Ollier representing the construction team and contractors.
The ribbon cutting took place following the dedication ceremony.
The library also hosted an open house for the public to take a look at the new facility.
