Batesville knocked off Lawrenceburg 7-3 in varsity baseball Thursday afternoon. Carson Meyer gave up two hits while striking out nine and walking four over five shutout innings to get the win. Meyer, Ronan Post and Noah Weigel each drove in a run for the Bulldogs…In the JV game, it was Lawrenceburg over Batesville in a slugfest, 14-9.
Batesville golf won a three-way match with Greensburg and South Dearborn at the Links at Rising Star in Rising Sun. It was the Bulldogs 145, the Pirates 169, and the Knights 206. Batesville’s Ian Hixson took medalist honors with a one-under-par-33.
Batesville hosted and won both ends of the Ripley County track and field meet. In the girls meet, it was the Bulldogs 141, the South Ripley Raiders 53.5, the Milan Indians 22, and the Jac-Cen-Del Eagles 11.5. Batesville’s Abby Miller was the girls meet MVP…In the boys meet, it was BHS 131, Ripley 58, Milan 40, and JCD 16. The Bulldogs’ Noah Davis was boys meet MVP.
Joe Kirkhoff is the new boys varsity basketball coach at Milan. He replaces Matt Pickerill, who resigned following the 2025-26 season. Kirkhoff comes to Milan from Whiteland. The Milan School Board approved Kirkhoff’s hiring at a special meeting this week. In addition to leading the boys basketball team, Kirkhoff will teach Business at MHS.
Jason Hughes has been hired as girls varsity basketball coach at Jac-Cen-Del, pending school board approval. He replaces Lilly Simon, who stepped down following the ’25-26 season. Hughes served last year as Jac-Cen-Del’s boys JV basketball coach.
The Chicago Cubs beat the Reds 8-3 at Wrigley Field to complete the four-game series sweep as heard yesterday on WRBI. The Cubs erupted for seven runs in the 4th inning to put the game away against starter Rhett Lowder and the Reds bullpen. Lowder exited in the 4th with right shoulder discomfort. He took the loss and drops to 3-3. The Reds went o-7 on the road trip against two NL Central Division opponents. They return to Cincinnati to start a six-game homestand with the first of three tonight against the Houston Astros. Nick Lodolo will come off the injured list and make his first start of the year. The Astros will counter with righthander Mike Burrows. He’s 1-4 with a 5.97 ERA. Coverage begins at 5:40 on 103.9 FM.
The NCAA made it official and announced on Thursday that it will expand men’s and women’s March Madness by eight teams to 76. It’s the first expansion of the basketball tournaments in 16 years when they were bumped to 68 teams each. With the increase to 76, the First Four — doubleheaders on back-to-back days in Dayton, Ohio — will be replaced by a 12-game Opening Round. The Tuesday and Wednesday of the men’s tournament will feature 12 games played by 24 teams in two different cities. There will now be three games each day in Dayton and three games each day in a second city yet to be determined. The expansion takes effect next season.
The Indianapolis Colts are moving on from a couple of members of their secondary. Indianapolis released veteran cornerback Kenny Moore II and safety Nasir Adderley on Thursday. The decision to move on from Moore comes after his recent trade request. General manager Chris Ballard agreed to explore trade possibilities during the NFL Draft, but nothing materialized. Adderley was attempting a comeback three years after retiring at 25.
A tense exchange between some IndyCar drivers over push-to-pass rules on Thursday. Recently, IndyCar changed push-to-pass rules to allow it to be used on restarts. This was the result of a software glitch at Long Beach a couple of weeks ago that allowed drivers to use it, even though it shouldn’t have been available. This led to Alex Palou, Kyle Kirkwood, and Pato O’Ward having a tense discussion over who did or didn’t use it at Long Beach. Practice and qualifying start today for the Sonsio Grand Prix on the IMS road course. We’ll have that race on WRBI tomorrow. Coverage begins at 4 p.m.
