Batesville topped Lawrenceburg 5-1 in varsity baseball last night at the Dawg Pound. Brayden Maple got the win. He pitched six scoreless innings of 2-hit baseball, striking out 4 and walking 4. At the plate, Maple drove in two runs. Ronan Post, Noah Weigel and Tiago Batta had two hits a piece. The Bulldogs will be back in action this afternoon at Columbus East, weather permitting. In the JV game, Lawrenceburg outslugged Batesville 10-8.

Batesville golf won a three-way match with Franklin County and Greensburg at Hillcrest last evening. It was the Bulldogs 151; the Wildcats 174, and the Pirates 188. Batesville’s Cooper Phebus earned medalist honors with an even par-35.

In a middle school golf four-way match at North Branch, it was Madison 184; Shelbyville 206; Batesville 208, and St. Louis 225. Rowan Maple carded a 43 to lead the Bulldogs.

The Chicago Cubs beat the Reds 5-4 at Wrigley Field in a game heard last night on WRBI. Michael Conforto’s pinch hit home run with two outs in the bottom of the 9th inning off Emilio Pagan lifted the Cubs to the win. JJ Bleday and Ke’Bryan Hayes homered for the Reds, who have lost four straight. Chase Petty made his 2026 debut. He gave three runs on four hits while striking out one and walking two in 5 2/3 innings. Game two of the four-game series is tonight. Lefthander Andrew Abbott goes for the Reds against Cubs righthander Jameson Taillon. Coverage begins at 7:10 on 103.9 FM.

Reds 1B Sal Stewart is the National League Rookie of the Month for March and April. The 22-year-old Stewart hit .281 (32-for-114) with nine home runs, 29 RBIs, six doubles, 18 walks, 20 runs scored, and seven stolen bases in 31 games. He also compiled a .570 slugging percentage and a .373 on-base percentage. Stewart’s 29 RBIs through March and April set a new franchise record for a Reds hitter prior to May since the stat became official in 1920.
