Reds continue roll with series sweep of defending World Series Champion

The Cincinnati Reds continued their hot streak on the road over the weekend, sweeping the reigning World Series Champion Houston Astros.

On Friday, the Reds beat the Astros in a low-scoring affair 2-1. The Reds scored both of their runs in the 7th inning, with Tyler Stephenson hitting a solo home run and Kevin Newman knocking in a run on a double.

The lone run by the Astros was scored on a Jeremy Peña ground out to short before Alexis Diaz would earn his 18th save on the season to give Cincinnati the win.

Rookie Andrew Abbott recorded his third straight scoreless to earn his 3 win on the season. The left-hander struck out 2 and walked 2 in 6 innings.

The Reds ran away with Saturday’s game, routing the Astros 10-3. Cincinnati’s offense got going in the first inning with a two-run home run by Jonathan India and never looked back.

Will Benson had a tremendous day at the plate, batting a perfect 3-3 with a triple, 2 walks and 2 RBI. Matt McClain was also great at the plate,  going 2-5 with a triple, a walk and 2 RBI.

Hunter Greene earned his second win of the season on the mound, striking out 3 and walking 4 while giving up 2 earned runs in 6 innings.

It took extra innings, but the Reds got the W in the series finale on Sunday, 9-7 in 10, to improve their record to 37-35 on the season.

Cincinnati did have to rally once again as they trailed by 5-2 after 4 innings. The Reds would tie it following a Jake Fraley RBI single and a two run Spencer Steer home run in the 6th. Two innings later, Jonathan India would give the Cincinnati a one-run lead on a solo homer.

Houston would tie it back up in the ninth with an RBI single by Chas McCormick to send it to extras.

In the 10th, the Reds would score three runs, one on a TJ Friedl sacrifice that scored Nick Senzel, the second on an RBI single by Elly De La Cruz, and the third on a Jake Fraley ground out to second, giving the Reds a 9-6 lead heading into the bottom half of the 10th.

Alex Young would close things out in the 10th to give Cincinnati their 8th win in a row, 9-7.

Jake Fraley went 2-4 with a home run and 3 RBI.

With the win, the Reds improve their record to 37-35, putting them just half a game back of first place Milwaukee in the NL Central.
