Reds complete 4-game series sweep of Nationals thanks to Nick Senzel’s late-game heroics

Nick Senzel was the hero in Cincinnati’s 5-4 win in 10 innings over the Washington Nationals on Thursday.

His first bit of heroics happened in the bottom of the ninth. With the game tied at 3 and a runner on second, Washington short stop CJ Abrams sent the wall at right, but Senzel came up with a leaping catch at the wall to record the out and prevent the game winning run from coming in.

The second bit of heroic came in the top of the 10th. With Tyler Stephenson on second as the automatic runner, Nick Senzel homered to give the Reds a 5-3 lead.

Cincinnati closer Alexis Diaz would enter the game in the 10th, giving up one run in the inning on an RBI single by Washington’s Lane Thomas to make it 5-4. After Jeimer Candelario was hit by a pitch, Diaz would retire the next three batters earn his 25th save on the season and give the Reds their fifth straight victory.

With the win, Cincinnati improves its record to 49-39 on the season. The Reds currently hold a two game lead in the Central as they open up a 4-game road set with the 2nd place Milwaukee Brewers tonight.
