Decatur County, IN — Decatur County Sheriff’s deputies and U.S. Marshals teamed up Thursday to conduct “Operation Commodore,” a county-wide sweep and check of registered sex offenders living and working in the county.

Sheriff David Durant says the sweep has been in the planning stages for several months and involved Decatur County Sexual and Violent Offender Registry (SVOR) Coordinator Ashley Wilson and the U.S. Marshal’s Service.

Six sheriff’s deputies and six members of the Marshal’s Service fanned out and hit several places around the county simultaneously.

The operation netted one felony arrest, three new Failure to Register charges, and 27 verifications out of 52 verifications attempted.

“Statutorily, the sex offender registry is one of the most critical jobs of any sheriff’s office,” Durant said. “As your Sheriff, I felt a partnership with the United States Marshal Service in going after sex offenders and making sure that they stay in compliance, especially during our Halloween season, was critical.

“Registered sex offenders need to know that at any time we may show up to make sure that you are complying so that we can continue to keep our community and especially our children safe. This is a major priority for me,” he added.

Durant also thanked the US Marshal Service for their participation in the operation.
