HOLTON, IN — One of Ripley County’s oldest residents has passed away.

Zelpha Naylor died Tuesday at her Holton residence at the age of 109.

Her passing came 68 days shy of what would have been her 110th birthday.

According to Stratton-Karsteter Funeral Home in Versailles, she was born when William Howard Taft was President and attended Brown School in Otter Creek Township. The land on which the one-room school stood is now part of Jefferson Proving Ground.

Mrs. Naylor lived through both World Wars and the Great Depression, and transportation went from horse and buggy to automobiles.

She was known as “The Pie Lady” because she baked pies for sale at auction houses, farmers’ markets, and social gatherings around the area. In fact, Mrs. Naylor made pies until the age of 107.

Zelpha Naylor will be laid to rest on Friday.
