(Statewide) – Fire departments across Indiana are warning consumers about the dangers of space heaters.
This comes after the Bargersville Community Fire Department had to respond to two space heater fires within 9 days of each other. Significant damage was caused by the fires, displacing two families.
Alternative heating equipment, such as space heaters, have the potential to cause great property damage, injuries, and even death.
“Heating equipment is a leading cause of fires in U.S. homes. Local fire departments responded to an estimated average of 44,210 home structure fires caused by heating equipment each year in 2016-2020. These fires resulted in annual losses of 480 civilian deaths, 1,370 civilian injuries, and $1 billion in direct property damage,” according to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA).
Space heater safety tips:
- Read manufacturer’s instructions
- Keep it at least 3 feet away from other object
- Never leave it unattended
- Check for damaged cords and plugs
- Place it on a flat, stable surface
- Don’t plug it into a power strip
- Ensure smoke detectors work
