Nun who kissed Elvis set to make Batesville stop

Batesville, In. — As part of the 150th Anniversary celebration at the St. Louis Catholic Church, Mother Delores Hart will visit with parishioners on the weekend of September 29.

Mother Delores Hart started her Hollywood career starring as Elvis Presley’s sweetheart in the movie “Loving You” in 1957 at the age of 19. She also co-starred with Elvis in the movie “King Creole.” In 1960 she starred with Connie Francis and George Hamilton in “Where the Boys Are. She earned a Golden Globe for Best Picture/Drama for her performance in “Lisa”, the story of a young Holocaust survivor. She also won a Tony nomination for her performance in Broadway in “The Pleasure of his Company.” In the film, “St. Francis of Assisi” she portrayed Clare, a woman who gave up everything to follow St. Francis and ultimately founded the Order of Poor Clares. Her last Hollywood appearance was in the movie “Come Fly With Me” with actor Hugh O’Brien.

At the top of her career, she shocked the entertainment world by announcing she was going to become a cloistered nun and enter the Abbey of Regina Laudis.  “I never felt I was ‘walking away from Hollywood'” she said recently. “I felt I was walking into something more significant and by that, I took Hollywood with me.”

Mother Delores Hart will host a “Meet and Greet” for local youth at the St. Louis Activities Center Sunday, September 30 and on Monday, October 1, Mother Hart will meet with the students from the Oldenburg Academy and St. Louis Catholic School.
