New State Law Bans Cell Phones in Classrooms

(Indianapolis, IN) – Cell phones will be banned from Indiana classrooms starting with the 2024-25 school year.

Gov. Eric Holcomb signed Senate Enrolled Act 185, which lawmakers say is meant to reduce distractions during class time, and increase student engagement.

Cell phones will only be allowed if the teacher says they’re needed for the lesson or in an emergency.

The new law requires school corporations and charter schools to adopt and implement a wireless communications device policy that governs student use of cell phones.

Those policies will be required to be published online.

The measure was co-authored by State Sen. Jeff Raatz (R-Richmond).

He represents Senate District 27, which includes part of Franklin County.
