New Report Reveals Bullying Incidents In Indiana Schools

INDIANAPOLIS – The state is releasing a new report that details investigated bullying incidents at Indiana’s public schools.

A new law passed last year requires schools to report incidents to the state. The law does not apply to private schools.

The data reveals approximately 9,400 incidents of bullying last school year. They are separated into categories, which were 44% verbal, 22% physical and 9% written/electronic. The rest of the incidents are considered social or a combination.

Locally, the numbers varied by corporation and school. Administrators at Batesville Community School Corporation investigated a total of 19 bullying incidents in the 2013-14 school year.

Milan and South Ripley Schools reported 28 incidents at each school corporation. At South Ripley High School there were 19 incidents last year.

Decatur County Community Schools reported 19 incidents; Franklin County Community School Corporation had 7; Greensburg Community Schools reported 18; and Sunman-Dearborn Community Schools had 20.
