Municipal Complex project rolls on; lots of questions about current fire station’s fate

(Greensburg, IN) – Greensburg City Council and the Board of Works last night each received the latest update on the construction of the new street department facility and fire station at Broadway and Barachel.

Meanwhile, city officials say the fate of the current fire station on Ireland Street is on a lot of people’s minds.

Fire Chief Nathan Stoermer says the issue hasn’t been discussed yet.

“It is asked quite often and asked quite frequently but we do not have an answer,” Stoermer said. “We probably won’t have an answer until we start to get a definitive date of when we move in. Currently, the city obviously still owns that property and it’s still a working firehouse and will remain a working firehouse up until the day before we move in.”

Stoermer says upon completion of the new fire station, the department will move operations in a manner that will not result in coverage or service gaps nor hamper response times.

“After it’s done, we will convene and start to talk about it with the Mayor (Joshua Marsh), economic development, and other interested parties on what to do with the current fire station on Ireland Street,” Stoermer added.

The Municipal Complex project remains on budget at $19.9 million, with completion expected in the spring of 2024.
