(Greensburg, IN) — Eastbound lanes of Interstate 74 were closed Wednesday afternoon near Greensburg after a suicidal man jumped from an overpass onto the highway below, prompting a large emergency response including a medical helicopter.
According to emergency dispatch communications, the incident occurred near the 132 mile marker on I-74, on the western outskirts of Greensburg. Emergency responders closed the eastbound lanes of the interstate following the incident. A Lifeline medical helicopter crew was among the units dispatched to the scene to assist the injured man.
Fox59 confirmed the closure was the result of a suicidal subject jumping from an overpass — a traumatic scene for both the victim and the motorists who witnessed it.
The 132 mile marker sits near the US 421 interchange, a busy access point into Greensburg from the interstate. Drivers were urged to seek alternate routes during the closure, which lasted approximately two hours. The eastbound lanes reopened around 4:05 p.m.
The condition of the man had not been released as of publication time. Indiana State Police were expected to lead the investigation.
