Man Jumps from I-74 Overpass

(Greensburg, IN) — Eastbound lanes of Interstate 74 were closed for several hours Wednesday afternoon near Greensburg after a suicidal man jumped from an overpass onto the highway below, prompting a large emergency response including a medical helicopter.

The incident occurred near the 132 mile marker on I-74, on the western outskirts of Greensburg.

Emergency responders closed the eastbound lanes of the interstate following the incident.

The 132 mile marker sits near the US 421 interchange, a busy access point into Greensburg from the interstate. Drivers were urged to seek alternate routes during the closure, which lasted about two hours.

The eastbound lanes reopened around 4:05 p.m.

Witnesses told Decatur County Communications, and Greensburg Police officers arriving on the scene, that the man jumped off of the overpass. Police have identified the man but his name will not be released by at this time.

The Greensburg Fire Department and Decatur County EMS rendered aid to the injured man, who was later transported by Lifeline air ambulance to a trauma facility in Indianapolis.

The man’s condition has not been released.
