Louis H. Simmermeyer, age 91 of Oldenburg, died Monday, May 21, 2018 at St. Andrew’s Health Campus. Born September 24, 1926 in Franklin County Indiana, he is the son of Matilda (Nee: Scheele) and Leo Simmermeyer. A Staff Sergeant in the army, he served in the Asiatic Pacific Theater during World War II. He married Viola Moorman August 13, 1949 at Holy Family Church in Oldenburg and she preceded him in death January 31, 2015. Louie was an account and controller for the Romweber Company 40 years before retiring as well as the water meter reader for the town of Oldenburg for years. He was a member of Holy Family Church and the Oldenburg Knights of St. John Commandry #220.
Louie loved being outdoors and working with his hands. He gardened, raised grapes to make wine and kept his yard well-manicured. He was one of those individuals that could fix anything around the house and was equally capable under the hood of a car. Louie enjoyed violin and big band music and he and Vi often attended dances. Gatlinburg was a favorite destination to visit and relax for them. A talented woodworker, he created many pieces of heirloom quality furniture for his family and had a soft spot for dogs, having had several through the years that were all special to him. Louie doted on his grandchildren. Being avid fisherman, he got to spend quite a bit of time fishing with his grandson and loved the frequent visits from his granddaughter and great granddaughter.
He is survived by his daughter Mary Beth (David) Welsh of Batesville; granddaughter Kate (Bob) Rauch of St. Leon; grandson Andy (Nicole) Welsh of Ypsilanti, Michigan and great granddaughter Carmen Rauch. In addition to his wife and parents, he is also preceded in death by his sister Rita Enneking.
