(Statehouse) – Legislation authored by local State Sen. Jean Leising (R-Oldenburg) that would provide more protection for farmers through the Indiana Grain Indemnity Fund passed the General Assembly and is headed to the governor’s desk for final consideration.
Senate Enrolled Act 461 would require grain dealers to be more fiscally responsible, keep accurate records on their purchases and improve other regulations and procedures.
“Several years ago grain dealers in Northern Indiana went bankrupt, making it difficult for some farmers to recover payment for the grain they provided,” Leising said. “SEA 461’s passage out of the General Assembly is a significant step forward in making sure grain dealers properly steward the resources of our state’s farmers, so it does not happen again.”
