(Batesville, IN) – The continuing work on the Batesville bike/pedestrian trail expansion project means headaches for motorists on a portion of State Road 229 starting next week.

City Engineer John Kuntz informed Batesville City Council Monday night that the sidewalk project that started last year on Walnut Street will pick up from where the work stopped at State Road 46, and continue north on 229.

As a result, crews are scheduled to shut down the outside lanes in both directions on 229 between 46 and the Kroger Plaza 30 days beginning Thursday, April 23.

“It’s going to be a lot,” Kuntz said. “It’s going to be a pain.

The project calls for walls and railings to be installed along State Road 229, similar to those already in place on the other side of State Road 46 on Walnut Street/State Road 229.

The work is being carried out in multiple phases to try and minimize disruptions along the busy corridor.

The project was first approved in 2019 as part of a broader push to build safer, more connected pathways for residents across the city. When fully complete, the trail will stretch along State Road 229 between Franklin Street and Six Pines Ranch Road.

The entire project is expected to wrap up by this November, with construction being carried out in multiple phases to help minimize disruptions along the busy corridor.
