ISP on the lookout for drunk, drugged drivers during tourney

Statewide — Indiana State Police has stepped up patrols to help curb alcohol and drug-impaired driving.

The enforcement campaign is running now through April 4.

The safety initiative is designed to reduce crashes and traffic fatalities and to promote safe driving around the NCAA Basketball Tournament.

Troopers are conducting high-visibility patrols over the next several weeks, showing zero tolerance for anyone driving aggressively, over the speed limit, or under the influence.

The extra enforcement is funded through National Highway Transportation Safety Administration grants administered by the Indiana Criminal Justice Institute (ICJI).

During this same time period a year ago, there were 73 fatalities and more than 2,200 injuries in vehicle crashes in Indiana.

ISP says that if you are going to an event involving drinking, you should designate a sober driver, use public transportation or take a ride service to get home safely.

If you encounter a possible impaired or unsafe driver on the road while driving, you’re urged to call 9-1-1.
