(Indianapolis, IN) – The Indiana Department of Education (IDOE) released new guidance this week for schools considering shifting to a four-day week.

House Enrolled Act 1266, which went into effect July 1, requires schools to meet several criteria before the Indiana State Board of Education can approve the move.

Schools must earn an “A” accountability grade; demonstrate improved student outcomes; engage families, staff and the community in the decision-making process; and provide remedial and enrichment opportunities on the fifth day for students who choose to attend a traditional five-day school.

In addition, schools must offer transportation for those students and pay teachers at least $45,000 annually.

There is currently just one school in Indiana that has adopted a four-day school week.

Vinton Elementary School in Lafayette recently completed the second year of a three-year pilot program, and it has reportedly yielded positive results, such as improved attendance, academic gains, and improved mental health and engagement.

About 850 school districts around the country operate on a four-day schedule.
