The crimes are said to have taken place in a series of home invasions in which the suspect engaged in sexual acts with the victims on the following dates:

  • December 16, 1982

  • February 18, 1983
  • November 25, 1984

A total of 10 victims are involved from crimes occurring on these dates.  Detectives from the Shelby County Sheriff’s Department requested special DNA testing from Parabon NanoLabs to retest DNA samples from the scenes. The tested samples narrowed the case down to two suspects.  After a new item of DNA came to light, the testing narrowed it down to Hessler.  The sample matched a sample from one of the seven crime scenes according to Landwerlen.  Hessler was arrested at his home in Greensburg on Monday morning.
