Greensburg, IN — The City of Greensburg cut the ribbon Saturday on its new water treatment plant.

The water plant went online in March 2021 but a formal ribbon cutting and open house were put on hold by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Saturday’s ribbon cutting was hosted by the Greensburg/Decatur County Chamber of Commerce and included city leaders plus past and present members of the Greensburg Water Board, as well as the city’s water customers.

Construction began in 2016, but the water plant had been on the city’s radar since Honda announced plans in 2006 to build what is now the company’s Indiana Auto Plant.

Greensburg native Darren Burkhart with HNTB Corporation of Indianapolis was the engineer of record on the water plant project. He said, along with the pandemic, one of the other challenges during construction was getting equipment because of supply chain issues.

The new facility replaces the previous water plant, which was built in 1954, which the city had outgrown and had become obsolete.

In addition to increased water capacity, officials say the water plant will help spur economic and residential growth in the Tree City.
