GREENSBURG, IN — Greensburg City Council accepted a surplus equipment bid and apparatus financing proposal from the fire department Monday night.

The move allows the department to sell a 1992 aerial truck to a fire department in Northern Indiana for $25,010.

The low bid was $1000.

Fire Chief Nathan Stoermer said it is no longer cost-effective to maintain the nearly 30-year-old apparatus and keep up with current insurance and national fire protection standards.

“We have declared it surplus property as we currently have another aerial already that we use primarily, so that will allow the highest bidder – which is a fire department – to utilize that for their community for several years and provide a level of protection that they currently don’t have,” said Stoermer.

Council gave Stoermer approval to solicit quotes for a new truck that would replace the apparatus now considered surplus.

Money from the sale of the surplus aerial apparatus will go toward the purchase of the new fire truck.
