Gov. urges lawmakers to act now and return $1B to Hoosier taxpayers

Gov. Eric Holcomb (R-IN)

STATEHOUSE — Indiana Gov. Eric Holcomb is calling on lawmakers to not wait to send a refund to taxpayers.

“When the State of Indiana officially closed our fiscal books on June 30, we collected $1.24 Billion more than was last forecasted, which has created over $6 Billion in reserves,” wrote Holcomb in an op-ed published Tuesday. “In short, Indiana’s economy continues an unprecedented growth rate, thanks to employers and employees investing their time and talent right here at home.

“I’ve called a Special Session to give an additional billion dollars back to Hoosiers -now – which would allow the Automatic Taxpayer Refund checks to read $350 per taxpayer versus $125,” he added.

Holcomb says a 40-year high national inflation rate is hitting residents daily.

“Returning $350 this August will help Hoosiers at the pump, at the grocery, or even sending kids back to school,” Holcomb said. “It’s the fairest and fastest way to help.  But, if there is a better idea to help Hoosiers now meet their household budgets, my sleeves are rolled up and I’m ready to pass a better plan when we all meet later this month.”

The special session convenes on Monday, July 25.

Lawmakers will also take up the state’s abortion law in the wake of the Supreme Court overturning Roe V. Wade.
