GJHS placed on lockdown; police determine no threat to students, staff

Greensburg, IN — Greensburg Jr. High School was placed on lockdown Tuesday morning following a 9-1-1 call that was made from the school around 8:30 am after someone heard two loud bangs that sounded like shots fired.

According to a letter sent to parents and guardians, the school immediately followed protocols and went into lockdown procedures.

A school resource officer was already on site and Greensburg Police officers were in the building a few minutes later.

Sweeps of the building were conducted and police determined that there were no threats to students or staff.

The Greensburg Police Department is thanking the Greensburg Junior High administration, staff, and students for following procedures that are in place, along with the Decatur County Sheriff’s Office, Decatur Country Central Dispatch, and Decatur County EMA for their assistance on the call.

The official statement below was issued by Greensburg Community Schools:

“Approximately at 8:30 this morning, a call to 911 was made from the junior high after a person heard two loud bangs. Following all protocols, GJHS went into our lockdown procedures. A school resource officer was already onsite, and members of the Greensburg Police Department were in the building moments later. Sweeps of the building were made to assess the situation. While it was concluded that there was no threat to our students and staff at any time, we understand that receiving a message of this type is unsettling. While we never want to have to test emergency protocols, we are grateful that our emergency response was swift and immediate.”
