Flash floods cause area roads to close

Franklin/Decatur Counties, IN — Heavy rains Thursday afternoon and early evening led to flash flooding in parts of Franklin and Decatur counties. Both counties were under Flood Advisories for about three hours.

Franklin County was placed under a Level Orange Travel Advisory, or essential travel only, due to the rain and flooded roadways.  Especially hit hard were areas northeast of Brookville toward the Ohio state line.  Flooding forced the closures of Liberty Pike at Whitcomb Road, Kunkel Road north of Whitcomb Road, and Farm Hill Road between Mud Road and Liberty Pike. In addition, Frazer Road off US 52 in Laurel Township had to be shut down because of standing water.

Northeastern Decatur County was also hit by flash floods which covered roads and made them impassable.  After rain moved out of the area, Decatur County Emergency Management reported quick improvement to travel conditions in the northeastern part of the county. However, the water moved debris onto some roadways and ditches. County Highway crews will work into Friday removing the debris, so Decatur County EMA is asking motorists to use caution while traveling in the area Thursday night.
