Dillsboro, IN—Wednesday evening the Dillsboro Fire Department received an alarm of a working structure fire on North Street in Dillsboro, of a three-story storefront brick building with four apartments above the ground floor. The building sits between a building that houses Deville’s Pharmacy and the United States Post Office, and on the other side, a storefront and apartment building.
When firemen arrived on the scene, they found heavy fire venting through the roof and spreading smoke all along the west side of the town. Firefighters attacked the fire both from the interior and by deploying mutual aid companies’ aerial ladders to suppress the spread from the top of the building according to Lieutenant Kevin Turner, the Public Information Officer for the Dillsboro Fire Department.
Firefighters were able to limit the spread of fire to the upper portion of the building, and no other structures were heavily damaged by the fire. A dog was rescued from one of the apartments upstairs. The dog was taken to a local veterinarian to received treatment and last known to the fire department is expected to make a full recovery from some smoke inhalation. No people were injured on the scene. However, three families were displaced and are now receiving aid from the Greater Cincinnati Tri-State Chapter of the American Red Cross. Difficult conditions inside with the roof collapsing against the ceiling of the third floor hampered putting the fire out, requiring firefighters from seven area departments to remain on scene until well after 1 am.
