(Greensburg, IN) – Greensburg City Council approved a $3 million investment Tuesday night as part of a public/private partnership with Main Street Greensburg to save and develop a dilapidated building on the square at 132 North Franklin Street.

The condemned building hasn’t been occupied since 2013, and the current owner has no desire to develop the property.

Greensburg/Decatur County Economic Development Director Bryan Robbins told Council they have an opportunity to shore up the structure and renovate the building through the Preserve Main Street project with READI funds.

Robbins says the total investment between the city and the developer with the streetscape is $3 million.

This deal with the developer will help leverage $2.5 million in Downtown Streetscape/READI dollars and maximize $500,000 in American Rescue Plan Act federal funds.

The building owner has agreed to sign the property over to Main Street Greensburg.

“Main Street organizations across the country are known as local downtown development catalysts, and we’re also the historic preservation champions, so this falls right in line with our mission and our goals for the downtown of overseeing this project and helping to steward it to completion,” said Main Street Greensburg Executive Director Rose Cronley.

Structural improvements are set to begin immediately.

Plans call for maintaining commercial space on the first floor while the second floor will be used for apartments.
