CPD shooting suspect dies in gun battle with police

Garden City, In. — A report from the Indiana State Police says the suspect in a shooting involving a Columbus police officer has died in a gunfire exchange with police.

At 4:20 a.m. Saturday Columbus police officer Joshua McCrary attempted to stop Quentin Starke, 44, of Bartholomew County, near the intersection of 11th and Washington Streets.

When Starke refused to stop a chase ensued into the Garden City area where deputies successfully deployed tire deflation devices on County Road 200 South near the water treatment plant. As Starke fled from McCrary on foot a he fired a shot at the officer. It is not known if McCrary was by a bullet or debris from the shot.

Multiple agencies including Columbus Police, Indiana State Police and SWAT with the Bartholomew County Sheriff’s Department began a manhunt in the area.

Around 12:20 p.m. Saturday a trooper spotted Starke in a secluded area. After Starke allegedly fired a shot but missed, the trooper engaged the suspect. Starke was declared deceased at the scene. It is not known if Starke died from the shot from the trooper or his own weapon.
