(Southeastern IN) – Even though there were not many contested races on this year’s municipal election ballots, the people had their say on Tuesday.

Three-term Democratic incumbent Darrick Cox got past Republican challenger Jerry Ertel by four votes in the Batesville City Council District 1 race.

“I’m unbelievably happy to represent the people of Batesville for four more years,” Cox said. “I love the town, I love what we’ve been able to do and I look forward to being able to make it a better place to live, stay and raise a family.”

Cox, who teaches Social Studies at Batesville High School, said a lot has been accomplished in the 12 years he’s been on council.

“But looking forward, we’re looking at upgrading the downtown area, redevelopment, the purchase of the Baxter Building offers up some transformational opportunities for downtown Batesville,” he said. “I think the industrial complex is something else that we want to look to continue to fill and grow.

“I’m looking forward to it and I’m really excited about the opportunity to be able to serve for four more years,” Cox added.

Council District 1 was the only contested race in the City of Batesville.

In Laurel, Danielle Roberts, Adam Hornsby, Linda Adams, Peter Connolly, and Tracy Brumfiel were elected to the five Town Council at-large seats from a field of eight candidates, while Nora Hundley won the Clerk-Treasurer’s race.

Incumbent Gloria Alumbaugh won another term as Westport Clerk-Treasurer.

Meantime, Westport voters overwhelmingly chose to increase the number of Town Council seats from three to five.

Alyssa Hall won the St. Paul Clerk-Treasurer’s race after garnering the most votes in both Decatur and Shelby counties.

Mayor and city council races in Lawrenceburg, Aurora, and Greendale were also decided Tuesday.
