Chauncey Russell Yaney

Gunnery Sergeant Chauncey “Russ” Yaney, retired, aged 60, of Guilford, Indiana, passed away unexpectedly on Friday, January 26, 2024. Born in New York to a military veteran with 20 years of service, Russ and his family relocated multiple times during his formative years, residing in different states and countries. At the age of 18, he commenced his own military career as a member of the United States Marine Corps, a commitment that lasted for 21 years. Demonstrating exceptional dedication and proficiency, Russ achieved a position in the top 5% of his class upon completing basic training. Throughout his military tenure, he served in numerous capacities, ranging from sheet metal mechanic to crew chief and door gunner. Russ participated in 32 deployments and embarked on six extended Mediterranean cruises, each lasting between six to nine months, resulting in a cumulative six years at sea. Subsequent to retiring from the armed forces, he devoted 11 years of his professional life to Bell Helicopters, where he played a vital role in the design of the Bell Boeing V-22 Osprey aircraft.

While the United States Marine Corps played a significant role in Russ’ life, he also prioritized his family. He consistently ensured the well-being of his wife, Edie, and held a deep affection for his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Russ’ culinary talents were highly anticipated by all, as he possessed a skill for crafting exceptional recipes and dishes that he shared with his loved ones. Utilizing two smokers, he regularly prepared mouthwatering meals, and during his leisure time, he found pleasure in watching the Food Network’s show, “Chopped”. Alongside his passion for cooking, Russ engaged in hunting, fishing, golfing, and relaxing on his hammock. Ever eager for new experiences, Russ was actively involving his brother and son in his aspirations to hike the Appalachian Trail. Demonstrating compassion through his actions, he consistently went to great lengths to bring happiness to others and lend a helping hand. Russ possessed a profound love for animals and was renowned for his ability to communicate with dogs and horses. As soon as his Bullmastiff, Gunner, matured, Russ had intentions to train him as a therapy dog.

Russ will be deeply missed by Edie, his wife of 41 years; children Joseph (Sandi) Caywood and Jennifer (Steve) Zajac; brother Carl (Tomoe) Yaney; grandchildren: Danielle (Kellie) Caywood, Patrick Caywood, Jakki Frankenhoff, Jodi Watkins, Katie Zajac and Isaac Zajac; great grandchildren: Patrick Tate Saunders, Jaxxon Saunders, Lilly McKinnon and Sofie Frankenhoff; nephew: Christopher Yaney; and special friend Gary South.
