BMS holds annual Veterans Day program

BATESVILLE, IN — Batesville Middle School held its annual Veterans Day program Thursday morning.

Although the event was not held in person again this year, it was streamed live on YouTube.

Principal Dave Strouse reminded students of the sacrifices made by service members, especially among those who enlist in their late teens and early 20s.

Strouse said they sacrifice a lot of family time.

“They may miss Christmas, they miss the holidays, or they may miss the birth of a child, or even the first steps of a child,” Strouse said. “They make many sacrifices. And for that, we are eternally grateful for that. And some pay the ultimate sacrifice.

“We can’t thank you enough,” he added.

State Senator Jean Leising (R-Oldenburg) recalled graduating from high school during the Vietnam War and losing friends to the fighting in Southeast Asia.

“The worst thing was the people who came back from that war, nobody recognized them,” Leising said. “They weren’t nice to them even because it was not a popular war.  So the veterans who are Vietnam veterans probably need a special ‘thank you.'”

The program featured recognition of local veterans and performances by the BMS band and choir.

Seventh-grade teacher Lisa Barnett organized the program, which can be viewed here.
