It was a tough way to lose an invitational, but such is the nature of the sport sometimes. Batesville advanced to the title match of the Shelbyville Boys Soccer Inviational Saturday but lost in a penalty kick shootout to the host Golden Bears.
BHS coach Kyle Hunteman reported the Bulldogs first match was a 2-1 victory over Knightstown. The match started around noon. Within the first half, Batesville managed to take a 1-0 lead when Ethan Goodin took a shot which was deflected into the net for an own goal by the Panthers.
In the second half, Knightstown answered back with the tying goal where the ball was passed up into the box and scored from a defensive mistake. But the Bulldogs Grant Peters received the ball from a corner kick where his shot bounced off the crossbar and back to him for a lofted header into the net to win the game.
The championship match took place against Shelbyville at 7 pm. About 30 minutes into the action, lightning struck nearby and delayed play. Both teams later returned to the field to finish out the half without denting the scoreboard.
The second half picked up as the Bulldogs fought the Golden Bears for possession. Shelbyville finally found its opportunity when the ball was sent down the wing and crossed into the box for a header on goal. Shortly after, Batesville took a corner which was fumbled around the box. Azmi Destriantoro finished the play to goal to tie the match.
The field play ended 1-1 before heading into a penalty shootout. Shelbyville took the win, 5-4, in PKs.
We thank coach Hunteman for the information.
