Area plagued by heavy rains, heat

(Southeastern IN) – Heavy rains overnight led to flash flooding around Southeastern Indiana this morning.

A number of area roads had to be closed this morning when they became impassable because of flooding, particularly around Franklin County.

Motorists are reminded not to drive through flood waters, and to “Don’t drown, turn around.”

The storms were accompanied by a lot of lightning.

Nearly 400 Duke Energy customers in the Cedar Grove area were without power this morning.

The railroad crossing lights were activated when a tree fell across the tracks at the U.S. 52 and Pennington Road crossing in Metamora.

Several water rescues took place Friday in Franklin County, and the Government Center in Brookville was closed for the day.

Franklin County Health Officer Dr. David Welsh says if you have to wade through flood waters to retrieve personal items and you start feeling sick, you’re urged to visit the county health department to get a tetanus shot.

Meanwhile. IDEM has extended the statewide Air Quality Action Day through Midnight Friday.

Ozone levels are expected to be in the Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups range, due to a significant jump in temperatures across the state and a continued air mass from the Canadian wildfires.

And a heat advisory is in effect through 9 o’clock tonight.

The National Weather Service says heat index values are expected to reach a maximum of 110 this afternoon and early evening.
