Greensburg, IN — The City Of Greensburg held a groundbreaking ceremony at the Greensburg Airport on Wednesday. Mayor Joshua Marsh, Greensburg Aviation Board President Bill Ernstes, Congressman Greg Pence, and representatives from BF&S and HIS Construction joined former Aviation Board members and former mayors at the airport. The Greensburg Aviation Board began the long-awaited expansion of the local airport back in 2000 with then-Mayor Gary Bailey. Since then, the project has seen five administrations with the project. A letter from Congressman Greg Pence to the FAA secured needed funding as the final step to start the project.
The project will take roughly 2 more years to complete according to Aviation Board President Bill Ernstes and the runway expansion will allow for new businesses to take flight in the region. The expansion will increase the overall size of the airport from 32 acres to about 185 acres and add a new, longer runway at a different angle. The new runway will be 5,400 feet in length while the existing runway is 3,400 feet long. According to Ernstes, the federal government will pay 95 percent of the cost, state government five percent, and the remaining five percent by the airport and/or the city.
