The Cincinnati Reds opened the so-called second half of the season with a 7-2 win over the Colorado Rockies in Denver in a game heard last night on WRBI. Spencer Steer hit two home runs, including an inside-the-park homer; Eugenio Suarez homered and doubled, and Elly De La Cruz went 4-for-5 with a home run. The offensive output supported a gem by starting pitcher Brady Singer. He went seven innings, allowed four hits, and two earned runs, with no walks, and six strikeouts. Singer improves to 4-9. The Reds can clinch a series win in the middle game this afternoon. Rhett Lowder (3-6, 5.05 ERA) makes the start for the Reds. Coverage begins at 2:40 on 103.9 FM.
Before last night’s game, the Reds activated outfielder Dane Myers from the 10-day Injured List. He had been on the shelf with a left shoulder contusion. In a corresponding roster move, infielder/outfielder Ivan Johnson was optioned to Triple-A Louisville.
Caitlin Clark made history by scoring a career-high 45 points and dishing out 10 assists in the Indiana Fever’s 110-107 win over the Seattle Storm last night at Gainbridge Fieldhouse. It was the first-ever 40-point, 10-assist game in WNBA history. The Fever (15-10) plays the second of a back-to-back tonight when they host the New York Liberty. Tipoff is at 8:00.
The Indiana Pacers (1-3) wrap up NBA Summer League play when they face the New Orleans Pelicans (2-2) tonight. Tipoff in Las Vegas is at 9 p.m.
IndyCar’s NTT series hits the oval track for the fourth time this season for tomorrow’s Music City Grand Prix at Nashville Superspeedway. Defending champ Josef Newgarden has won two of the three races on ovals, so far. Alex Palou is the points leader heading into the weekend, with Kyle Kirkwood and Christian Lundgaard looking to track him down.
