The Reds and Phillies combined for just eight hits on Thursday night but in the end it was Philadelphia scoring a 1-0 victory at Great American Ballpark. Justin Crawford’s RBI single in the top of the eighth proved to be the difference and allowed Phillies starting pitcher Jesus Luzardo his eighth win of the season, allowing just two hits and striking out 11 in the process. Brady Singer took the loss for the Reds despite a stellar effort. He struck out four and gave up four hits in seven and one-thirds innings. After dropping two of three to Philadelphia, the Reds now get the task of hosting the Chicago Cubs for a three-game weekend series. Hunter Greene makes his second start of the season for the Redlegs and he will be opposed by Chicago’s Shota Imanaga. Coverage on WRBI begins at 6:40.
A strong second half propelled the Indiana Fever to a 92-89 road win on Thursday night against the Phoenix Mercury. Kelsey Mitchell’s lay-in late in the fourth quarter sealed the deal for Indiana. Mitchell finished with 29 points and eight assists while teammate Aliyah Boston added 21 points and nine rebounds. At 13-9, Indiana now is tied for the best record in the Eastern Conference. The Fever visit the Las Vegas Aces on Sunday night at 7:00.
Speaking of Vegas, the Indiana Pacers begin NBA Summer League play today in the Sin City. Indiana native and former Purdue standout Braden Smith makes his NBA debut when the Pacers take on the Cleveland Cavaliers. Cleveland will feature former New Albany standout Sean East II. Tipoff is scheduled for 4:30 and can be seen on ESPN2.
Three Southeastern Indiana football standouts will play their final high school game tonight as part of the 60th Annual North/South Football All-Star Classic at Decatur Central High School. East Central’s Gavin Osterman will be featured on the offensive line while Switzerland County’s Matthew Young is set to line up at wide receiver. Milan’s Wyatt Marsh will not be at quarterback but instead will be featured at defensive back. Coverage of tonight’s game will be on YouTube Live and the ISC Sports Network. Congratulations to three Eastern Indiana Athletic Conference baseball players who were named Academic All-State by the Indiana High School Baseball Coaches Association. Seniors Noah Weigel of Batesville, John Meyer of Greensburg and Mason Hamlett of South Dearborn were named to the team which recognizes excellence inside the classroom. The trio was nominated by their respective head coaches on the baseball diamond.
