The Miami Marlins beat the Reds 7-4 in a game heard last night on WRBI. Brady Singer was roughed up; he surrendered six runs – five earned – on 10 hits in 2 2/3 innings of work. Singer falls to 0-1. Miami native Sal Stewart was 2-for-4 at the plate with a home run, a double, two runs batted in, and a stolen base. TJ Friedl went 3-for-5. The loss snaps the Reds five-game winning streak. The Reds made some roster moves yesterday. Infielder Christian Encarnacion-Strand was designated for assignment. The team also placed catcher Jose Trevino on the 10-day Injured List with a thoracic spine strain, retroactive to April 5. In a corresponding move, the Reds selected the contract of catcher/infielder P.J. Higgins from Triple-A Louisville.
Indiana Pacers head coach Rick Carlisle will miss the next two games to attend his daughter’s spring formal. Associate head coach Lloyd Pierce will take over until Carlisle returns for Sunday night’s season finale at home against Detroit. The Pacers currently have the second-worst record in the NBA at 18-61, and are second-to-last in the Eastern Conference. The top prospect in the upcoming NFL Draft will not attend the event in person. According to ESPN, former Indiana Univ. quarterback Fernando Mendoza is choosing to spend his draft experience with family and friends in Miami. The Las Vegas Raiders are expected to select the reigning Heisman Trophy-winning national champion QB with the number one pick. This year’s draft is being held in Pittsburgh April 23-25. The Cincinnati Bengals have the 10th overall pick; the Indianapolis Colts’ first selection will be in the second round at #47.
