Pets, People Safe After Fire

(Greensburg, IN) – A structure fire displaced four people and 11 pets Tuesday morning in Greensburg, but no injuries were reported thanks in part to working smoke detectors inside the home.

Greensburg Fire Department crews were dispatched at 9:34 a.m. to a residence at 127 West Walnut Street, where they encountered heavy smoke upon arrival. Firefighters were able to bring the situation under control, and all occupants made it out safely.

Fire officials said the home’s smoke detectors were functioning, a factor credited with helping alert those inside and preventing injuries. The fire left four residents displaced, along with 11 pets — four dogs and seven cats.

Multiple agencies assisted at the scene, including the Greensburg Police Department, Letts Volunteer Fire Department, Decatur County EMS, Decatur County Communications, Decatur County Crisis Intervention Team, Decatur County Animal Control, and Greensburg Utilities.

Animal Control worked to ensure the pets were accounted for and safe following the fire, while utility crews secured services to the damaged structure.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
