Chicken Truck Doesn’t Duck

(Indianapolis) – A semi-truck hauling Tyson chicken products struck an overpass on the near east side Monday night, damaging both the tractor-trailer and the bridge but causing no injuries, police and witnesses said.

The crash happened about 7:30 p.m. near South Rural Street and Moore Avenue, Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department officials said. The southbound rig attempted to drive under a railroad overpass marked with a 10-foot, 3-inch clearance, but was too tall and became wedged beneath the span. The truck and trailer — loaded with chicken — sustained significant damage, and the underside of the bridge also was struck in the collision.

Fire crews and IMPD blocked the nearby intersection so responders could safely free the vehicle. No injuries were reported at the scene, and the driver cooperated with officers.

Low-clearance bridge strikes like this are a common hazard for oversized trucks, particularly where older infrastructure predates modern federal height standards. Many overpasses across the U.S. have been hit repeatedly because vehicles taller than the posted limits fail to detour or misjudge their loads.

As of now, there’s no word on whether any citations were issued or if the Federal Railroad Administration or Indiana authorities will inspect the bridge for structural concerns. Traffic delays in the area were limited to the immediate response period.

Officials urge commercial drivers to plan routes carefully and heed posted clearance signs to prevent similar crashes. The incident remains under review by IMPD and local transportation officials.
