The congregation traces its beginnings to January 6, 1851, when Mother Theresa Hackelmeier arrived in Oldenburg from Austria to establish a religious community dedicated to educating the children of German immigrant families. From those early efforts, the Sisters developed a mission grounded in Franciscan spirituality and service that has endured for nearly two centuries.
While education formed the cornerstone of their early work, the Sisters’ ministries expanded over time as societal needs evolved. Their service has included social services, healthcare, pastoral care and ongoing advocacy for peace and justice. The congregation played a foundational role in teacher education that eventually contributed to the establishment of Marian University in Indianapolis and founded Oldenburg Academy of the Immaculate Conception, which continues to operate today.
The Sisters have remained active and relevant well beyond their early years, continuing to engage with contemporary social issues they view as matters of moral and spiritual importance. Members of the Oldenburg community have participated in public prayer and witness events, including national gatherings where Catholic sisters have spoken about immigration concerns, economic justice and human dignity. The congregation has also taken public positions opposing racism, advocating care for creation and rejecting the death penalty, reflecting principles they say are rooted in their understanding of faith and Franciscan values.
Leaders within the community have said this willingness to speak publicly is not a departure from their mission, but an extension of it. The Sisters describe their work as being “sent to extend the mission of Jesus through their presence and service,” a calling they say continues to guide their actions today.
As the congregation marks 175 years, members view the anniversary as both a celebration of their past and a recommitment to future service. The public is invited to participate by sending cards of congratulations to Sisters of St. Francis, P.O. Box 100, Oldenburg, IN 47036.
