Grocer Offers Discount to Poor

STATEWIDE — Kroger has launched a new “Verified Savings” program designed to help customers receiving government assistance lower their grocery bills, with a focus on making fresh food more affordable.

The program offers eligible shoppers 20% off fresh fruits and vegetables through Jan. 31, 2026. Once enrolled, the discount is automatically applied at checkout when customers shop using their Kroger digital account.

Verified Savings is available to customers who participate in assistance programs such as SNAP, WIC and Medicaid. To sign up, shoppers must have a Kroger digital account and complete an online eligibility verification using SheerID, a third-party verification service commonly used by retailers.

Kroger says eligibility must be re-verified every five months to remain enrolled in the program.

In addition to the produce discount, Verified Savings participants can purchase Boost by Kroger Plus memberships at 50% off, which includes benefits such as free grocery delivery and extra fuel points. For customers who already have a Boost membership, the discounted rate applies at the next renewal.

Kroger says the Verified Savings program is part of a broader effort to improve access to fresh food while helping families stretch their grocery dollars.
