(Decatur County, IN) – An alert Decatur County Sheriff’s deputy is being credited with saving a couple from being scammed.
It was around 5:30 Tuesday evening, when Corporal Logan Wilder stopped at a local gas station and noticed a couple at the Bitcoin machine, talking on the telephone and looking nervous.
Wilder had taken numerous scam reports recently and became suspicious.
He talked to the couple, who explained that their computer had been hacked or malware had been downloaded.
They called what they believed to be Microsoft to resolve the issue, only to be told to put their entire savings in Bitcoin because their bank was under investigation.
Corporal Wilder and a Greensburg Police officer contacted Bitcoin and stopped the $1,080 transaction, which prevented the couple from losing a substantial amount of money.
Decatur County Sheriff Bill Meyerrose praised Wilder for his quick action, as well as his dedication and service to Decatur County residents as well as the Sheriff’s Office.
Sheriff Meyerrose reminds you that legitimate companies and organizations will not ask for payment through Bitcoin, Green Dot or Apple gift cards.
He also cautions about giving donations to organizations over the phone or online, and that there are many local groups that can use the help this holiday season and throughout the year.
Sheriff Meyerrose encourages anyone with concerns or questions about similar activities to contact local law enforcement or the Decatur County Communication Center (812) 222-4911 before completing any transaction, since there are many such scams and thefts occurring this time of year.
These include property or income tax warrants; missed jury duty; computer hacks; a loved one arrested or jailed in another state; charitable organizations requesting donations, and any payments involving Apple Gift Cards or Bitcoin.
