(Batesville, IN) – Batesville Police say a resident called the department on Friday to report they had been scammed.
The victim said they were contacted by someone they believed to be a detective representing their bank.
That person claiming to be with the bank instructed the victim to send cash by mail to an address in another state.
Officers were able to intercept the package before it was delivered, and the money will be returned to the victim.

Officers say there are a number of signs to look out for, such as:
- Offers that seem too good to be true.
- Someone offering gifts or money that requires upfront payment is almost always a scam.
- Someone pressuring you to act quickly. Scammers do not want you to have time to think before you act or seek advice from anyone.
- If someone contacts you and says a loved one is in trouble or in jail and needs money, this could be a scam. The best thing is to reach out to that person directly to confirm they are ok.
- If the individual tells you to keep something a secret, lie about what you are doing, or threatens you in any way, these are signs of a scam.
- If you are contacted by someone claiming to be from your bank or another financial institution, the best thing to do is contact them directly. Do not use any phone numbers or e-mails provided by the individual. Look up the official contact details from another source. Then contact the bank or financial institution directly to confirm whether there is a problem.
- Be wary of requests to pay via wire transfer, gift card, payment app, cash by mail, or cryptocurrency, as these methods are difficult to trace and recover.
- Do not give out any personal information, such as your Social Security number, account numbers, or passwords.
- If you have been targeted or scammed, the best thing to do is stop all communications with them and reach out to your local police department.
